Darryl Salmons, formerly Group CIO with built environment services firm Amey has joined DS Smith as Group CIO. Salmons confirmed his move to Horizon this week. DS Smith manufacturers specialist corrugated plastic packaging for the consumer and manufacturing industries.
Salmons was Group CIO at Oxfordshire based Amey for four years during one of the organisation’s busiest periods. Amey provide maintenance to organisations such as Network Rail and act as an outsourcing operator of a wide range of services to public sector organisations as well as private sector businesses.
Salmons’ career includes technology leadership roles in financial services regulation, manufacturing and professional services. Prior to joining Amey Salmons spent two years in consulting and was CIO for the Financial Services Authority for five years before that, leading the IT operations from 2005 to 2010 through the worst financial crisis to hit UK banking. Salmons had been Group CIO with money services business De La Rue for four years before joining the Financial Services Authority.
DS Smith can trace its roots back to 1940 and in 2015 reported revenues of over £3 million. The organisation has 26,000 employees and is a major part of the recycling industry in the UK. The business has major sites in Kent and Somerset for the manufacturing of cardboard and plastic packaging. Since the 1980s DS Smith has been acquiring related business to strengthen its market position, the most recent deal being in May 2015 with the acquisition of Duropack for £220 million. The largest deal was £1.3 billion for SCA of Sweden in 2012.
