Logistics providers Wincanton has put Richard Gifford into the driving seat as its CIO.  Gifford steps into the cab of Wincanton following just over four years with civil engineering and outsource property services Carillion.

FTSE listed Wincanton is the UK’s largest logistics companies with over 17,000 employees operating from 20 locations across the UK in 3400 HGV vehicles.  Wincanton has recently secured contracts with fast moving consumer goods giants Britvic, known for its drinks and retailers Wilko.

Gifford (pictured below), a leading time trial cyclist, joined Wolverhampton headquartered Carillion in January 2013 having been a CEO in the public sector.

Carillion entered the UK market in 1999 as a brand name following a demerger with Tarmac, the company known for its road building materials. A busy period of mergers and acquisitions in the early part of this century saw Carillion acquire several major construction and service-management organisations – including Mowlem in 2006, Alfred McAlpine in 2008 and energy services specialist Eaga in 2011.

20140103_Carillion_3Gifford’s experience at Carillion will serve him well at Wincanton, both are FTSE listed business and both are sectors that are dependent on gaining the most from the operating cost as margins are under constant pressure.

At Carillion Gifford negotiated the organisation out of a contract with Accenture and into a new model with Indian systems integrator Wipro with the latter being targeted on the amount of innovation it brought to the business.  Gifford was also a proponent of developing mobile applications across the diverse Carillion business to improve health and safety as well as productivity.

Wincanton has recently entered into a partnership with L Marks the startups investor to look for innovation in five key areas: asset utilisation, brokering, connected vehicles, data and a wildcard open category that will allow L Marks to challenge Wincanton. Senior leaders from Wincanton will mentor startups as part of the programme

CIO turned COO Andy Hayward at retailer N Brown is also in a partnership with L Marks.
