DMG, the media business known for its Daily Mail and Metro tabloid newspapers has announced its new leadership team following the departure of CIO Steve Homan earlier this year. Heather Utech joins the Kensington based organisation Chief Technology Officer Commercial.

To ensure Utech is focused on helping DMG continue its digital transformation, DMG has also appointed Grant Alston as Director of IT Operations.

Utech will report to Kevin Beatty, CEO, dmg media. The former Thomas Cook innovation leader will be responsible for leading the technical development of initiatives such as the Mail Newspapers’ loyalty platform.

Utech was Group Head of IT at Thomas Cook for the last three years. A graduate of the University of Nottingham, Utech’s 16 year IT career began at car manufacturer Ford and has included senior positions at Hotels4U and Avis.

“She is a focused, determined executive with an impressive track record of applying technology solutions in fast-changing consumer businesses,” Kevin Beatty said in a statement.

Utech is the second innovation leader at DMG to come from the leisure sector, Homan was previously at Fitness First the gym business. Homan (pictured below) told Horizon recently he was looking for an interesting new challenge and is following in the footsteps of another former DMG CIO, Ian Cohen and is working with startup and fast growth technology businesses.

Altson will report to James Welsh, Group Finance & Operations Director. He will assume full leadership of the group’s IT Operations function and continue the work it does servicing dmg media’s business needs, including technology strategy, digital and editorial to print operations.

“Grant is a knowledgeable and highly capable technology leader. With ten years’ experience in senior IT roles at dmg media, Grant has a real understanding of the group’s businesses and operational needs and I’m delighted to have him head up IT Operations,” Welsh said in a statement.

Utech taking the CTO job title confirms a trend Horizon and innovation leaders Ian Cohen and Trevor Didcock have all identified of the CTO role coming back into favour.
