European CIO of the Year Phil Jordan is joining one of the UK’s foremost retailers Sainsbury’s as Group CIO. Jordan joins London headquartered Sainsbury’s having been with global telecoms giant Telefonica since 2010 as European CIO and then Global CIO.
Jordan has spent the bulk of his career in telecoms, having joined Telefonica from Vodafone whom he joined in 1998. Prior to a long career in telecoms Jordan experienced financial services and the energy sector at AXA and BOC respectively.
Sainsbury’s lost John Rudoe to Shop Direct in November of last year. Rudoe was digital and technology director, a new role at Sainsbury’s, replacing that of IT Director following the departure of Rob Fraser in 2014 after a five year career with the organisation.
In a statement Sainsbury’s says Jordan will report to Group CEO Mike Coupe and be a member of the retailer’s operating board.
“Jordan’s appointment recognises the strategic importance of digital and information technology as an enabler for our future success and sets us up to deliver excellence in this area across the business,” Coupe said in a statement.
“The role of the Digital & Technology function in the retail sector has never been greater as the pace of change accelerates,” Jordan says. “Technology and digital services extend to every part of Sainsbury’s and, following its recent expansion, this is a very exciting time to join the Group.”
Shop Direct, which recruited Rudoe, lost Liz Robson from its senior technology leadership team last year, Robson replaced Anna Barsby as CIO of outdoor, cycling and motoring retailer Halford. Anna Barsby is now CIO of Morrisons, one of the major rivals to Sainsbury’s.
